The third evening of action from the Galway Races on Wednesday is another is another card that offers something for everyone with both Flat and jumps racing to look forward to.
The Galway Festival rolls on this Wednesday evening with day three of the big summer meeting.
The Grade 3 Galway Plate is the feature event on a seven-race card which also includes some intriguing handicaps.
We have picked out a trio of selections to follow on Wednesday evening including a couple of each-way fancies at what could be rewarding odds.
Selections
- 17:05 Galway – Coded Welder @ 13/2
- 18:05 Galway – Enfranchise @ 4/1
- 18:40 Galway – Olympic Man @ 14/1
17:05 Galway – Coded Welder @ 13/2
Wednesday’s opener is an intriguing contest and Willie Mullins’ Hipon De Loire is likely to be all the rage after his narrow miss at this meeting last season.
However, he’s so short in the market that he gives the race an attractive each-way shape and he’s not guaranteed to get the new trip given that he’s shown plenty of speed on the Flat, so he may be worth taking on at a prohibitive price.
The one that appeals most at reasonable odds is CODED WELDER. Paul Mulligan’s six-year-old made a promising start to life under rules when firmly in the mix in a bumper before running out in the closing stages.
He hasn’t shown any signs of temperament issues in two subsequent starts over timber, so that is worth forgiving. He shaped well from the rear over just short of three miles at Punchestown before a narrow defeat in a Tipperary maiden hurdle where he gave the impression he would relish the step back up in distance.
He’s been ridden by conditional riders before today but the booking of Sam Swing certainly catches the eye for this assignment.
Given that he’s proven on this sort of ground, he could be hard to keep out of the frame if he finds any further improvement on just his third start over timber.
18:05 Galway – Enfranchise @ 4/1
ENFRANCHISE may have been a beaten short-price favourite in last year’s renewal of this contest but she may have been underestimated in her bid to make amends on Wednesday night.
She looked well treated coming into last year’s race when trained by John Hanlon and while she failed to fire, it’s interesting that she’s been improving on the level for her new connections.
If she can translate that form to this sphere, then a mark of 121 certainly should still be within her range and she’s versatile with regards to conditions, so makes plenty of appeal at her odds and it would be no surprise if she was vying for favouritism later in the day.
18:40 Galway – Olympic Man @ 14/1
The feature race looks like a typically competitive renewal but it may be worth taking a chance on OLYMPIC MAN down at the bottom of the weights.
He was set some tough assignments at the back end of last season when Willie Mullins was going for the Trainer’s Championship but the marathon trips probably stretched his stamina on his last couple of starts in Britain, and he was previously an impressive winner over fences at Naas.
There’s a suspicion that this sort of test will be more to his liking and he has the assistance of Danny Mullins in the saddle, a jockey that excels at this venue.
