The Capitals drafted Ryan Leonard in the 2023 draft in the 8th overall spot. He had returned to Boston College for his sophomore year and in hopes of winning an NCAA championship. During the season, Leonard racked up 30 goals and 19 assists in 37 games. 9 of these goals were game winning goals. He had back to back 30 goal seasons which hadn’t been done since 09-10 and 10-11 seasons. He was named to the Hockey East All-Star team and the Hockey East Player of the Year.
He has also played for Team USA and helped them get their second straight gold medal at the 20245 IIHF World Junior Championship. Leonard was captain of the U.S. team, and was named tournament MVP.
His entry level contract is for three years and worth $950,000 per year.
