10 – British Home Championship (March 16, 1896) – Wales 1-9 England
The biggest number of goals in this fixture were scored in the 1896 meeting, which took place at Cardiff Arms Park. Derby County striker Steve Bloomer was the star of the show, scoring five times for England, including two goals in the last seven minutes.
9 – World Cup Qualifying (January 24, 1973) – England 1-1 Wales
The only draw in the list, both teams were packed with iconic names for a high-profile clash at Wembley Stadium in 1973.
England included the likes of Bobby Moore, Alan Ball, Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence, up against a Wales team featuring Gary Sprake, Terry Yorath and John Toshack.
Liverpool star John Toshack tapped home Leighton James’ pull back from the byline to give the visitors the lead, before Norman Hunter’s long-range strike levelled matters in the first half.
8 – British Home Championship (November 23, 1960) – England 5-1 Wales
An emphatic England victory was watched by 65,000 fans at Wembley, with two names stealing the show before going on to great things in their careers.
Jimmy Greaves scored two of his 44 England goals in this game, while soon-to-be World Cup winner Bobby Charlton was also on the scoresheet.
Future England manager Bobby Robson was also in the starting line-up for the hosts.
7 – British Home Championship (May 2, 1984) – Wales 1-0 England
This was the last year of the British Home Championship and Wales claimed a famous win thanks to teenager Mark Hughes.
The forward had just completed his first full season at Manchester United and powered a first-half header past Peter Shilton to delight the home crowd in Wrexham.
6 – World Cup Finals (November 29, 2022) – England 3-0 Wales
Meeting in the World Cup for the first ever time, both teams were looking to qualify from Group B in Qatar.
After a goalless first half, England took a firm grip of the match five minutes after half-time when Marcus Rashford curled in a stunning free kick, before Phil Foden side-footed home from Harry Kane’s right-wing cross.
The win was sealed on 68 minutes, when Rashford fired his shot through the legs of Wales keeper Danny Ward to send the Three Lions through in style.
5 – British Home Championship (May 17, 1980) – Wales 4-1 England
Wales had not qualified for a major tournament in 22 years going into this clash at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. Mickey Thomas’ close range volley put them in front, before Ian Walsh’s header after 30 minutes doubled the lead.
Paul Mariner made it 2-1 before half-time, but the hosts were not to be denied. Leighton James squeezed in a close range effort on the hour, before a Phil Thompson own-goal wrapped up the scoring in a famous Welsh win.
4 – European Championship Qualifier (November 16, 1966) – England 5-1 Wales
Four months on from lifting the World Cup, England faced Wales at Wembley in a European Championship qualifier.
A brace from Geoff Hurst put England 2-0 up within 34 minutes and although Wyn Davies pulled a goal back, Bobby Charlton restored the hosts’ two-goal advantage before half-time.
Terry Hennessey scored an unfortunate own goal to extend England’s lead, before Jack Charlton joined his brother on the scoresheet in a resounding home win.
3 – British Home Championship (May 31, 1977) – England 0-1 Wales
Wales have only won six times on English soil and arguably the biggest upset came in May 1977, when they claimed a 1-0 success at Wembley.
Led at the time by Don Revie, the Three Lions included the likes of Keegan, Trevor Brooking and Mick Channon in their side, but they couldn’t break down a stubborn Wales backline.
The visitors broke the deadlock with a James penalty just before half-time and held on to take the victory.
2 – World Cup Qualifier (October 10, 1953) – Wales 1-4 England
Over 60,000 fans turned up at Cardiff’s Ninian Park to see this Group 3 World Cup qualifier, with some legendary names playing for both sides.
The hosts, who included Leeds United star John Charles, took the lead thanks to Swansea forward Ivor Allchurch. England – captained by the great Billy Wright – fought back, though, with four unanswered goals, including two from Nat Lofthouse.
1 – European Championship (June 16, 2016) – England 2-1 Wales
The two rivals met at a major tournament for the first time ever in the summer of 2016, with England coming out on top in this huge Euros showdown after a dramatic conclusion in Lens.
A long-range free-kick from Gareth Bale gave Wales the lead just before the half-time break, before Jamie Vardy equalised for England after 56 minutes.
The teams looked like sharing the spoils until Daniel Sturridge popped up with a memorable England winner in stoppage time.
