Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss has finally offered a brand new update regarding the possibility of producing Sherlock Season 5. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the acclaimed mystery crime drama ran on-air for four seasons from 2010-2017. It currently holds a Tomatometer rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“In this contemporary version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories, Dr. John Watson is a war vet just home from Afghanistan,” reads the show’s original synopsis. “He meets the brilliant but eccentric Holmes when the latter, who serves as a consultant to Scotland Yard, advertises for a flatmate. Almost as soon as Watson moves into the Baker Street flat, they are embroiled in mysteries, and Sherlock’s nemesis, Moriarty, appears to have a hand in the crimes.”

What was the Sherlock Season 5 update?

During a recent interview with the Italian Global Series Festival, Gatiss admitted that making Sherlock Season 5 would be “very difficult,” especially when its lead stars aren’t interested in reprising their iconic roles. “Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] didn’t want to do any more,” he said.

Gatiss also confirmed that he previously tried pitching a Sherlock movie to Cumberbatch and Freeman during the pandemic. “They both like the idea, but it has not happened,” he continued. “It’s important to acknowledge when a time is a time. Sometimes, it is there and then it stops, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Going back is often very difficult.”

The original drama was co-created and written by Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The show also starred Andrew Scott as Jim Moriary, Rupert Graves as D.I. Greg Lestrade, Molly Hooper as Louise Brealey, Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan Watson, and more. Despite receiving Ceritified Fresh scores on its first three seasons, the show final two installments have both received mixed reviews, with Season 4 garnering the franchise’s lowest-rating with 54%.
