Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart) was best known as the founder and main songwriter for iconic soul/funk group Sly and the Family Stone. He formed the band in 1967 alongside his younger brother Freddie (guitar) and younger sister Rose (keyboards/vocals), as well as bassist/vocalist Larry Graham. They went on to release several groundbreaking records during tenure as a group, including Dance to the Music, Fresh, and their 1971 masterpiece, There’s a Riot Goin’ On.
The Family Stone were known for wearing flamboyant stage attire, as well as their adventurous blend of funk, R&B, soul, and Motown arrangements. Their music tackled a range of subject matter; from free-spirited dance tracks to songs confronting discrimination and political unrest. The original lineup of the Family Stone only lasted until 1974, though Sly continued releasing records under the name for some years after.
