Kentucky Geological Survey Challenges the Seismic Hazard Map
Ten years ago the Kentucky Geologic Survey at the University of Kentucky set out to challenge the high hazard risk, determined by the U.S. Geological Survey, for Western Kentucky. KGS constructed the Kentucky Seismic and Strong Motion Network, made up of 24 stations across state, to monitor earthquake activity. Using data collected by the network, Drs. Jim Cobb and Zhenming Wang calculated the risk. They discovered the USGS’s math wasn’t correct. The risk assessment matters because it puts Kentucky at an unnecessary disadvantage when trying to attract federal facilities, impeding economic development.
